Frequently Asked Questions about Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is beyond a doubt one of the most powerful methods of creating change in a person.

Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration, both mental and physical, removing peripheral awareness. It creates a state in which we can communicate suggestions to our subconscious mind where changes at the subconscious level can take place.

There is no magic to achieving success with hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses to, can reach deep relaxation and redirected focus.

Definition of hypnotherapy

Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep. It does involve the induction of a trance-like condition. When the client is actually in an enhanced state of awareness they are able to hear and concentrate entirely on the hypnotist’s voice.

How does it work?
Hypnosis is thought to work by altering our state of consciousness in such a way that the analytical left-hand side of the brain is turned off, while the non-analytical right-hand side is made more alert. The conscious control of the mind is inhibited, and the subconscious mind awoken. Since the subconscious mind is a deeper-seated, a more instinctive force than the conscious mind, this is the part which has to change for a person's behaviour and physical state to alter. Working with a person's subconscious mind is like '"working behind the scenes".

For example, a person who consciously wants to overcome their fear of heights may try everything they consciously can to do that. But as long as the subconscious mind retains their terror it will prevent the client from succeeding. Progress can only be made by reprogramming the subconscious mind so that deep-seated instincts and beliefs are abolished or altered.

Do I lose my self-control?

Never, this is a common fear and a misbelief. You are in total control of yourself during the entire therapy. People will not do things under hypnosis that they would be unwilling to do otherwise. The person being hypnotised decides how deep they will go in trance and what suggestions they will accept and when to awaken.

Hypnotherapy aims at helping you gain better control of yourself! You are always aware of what is happening around you. You hear the therapist all the time. In fact, there is no point in the therapist talking to you if you were asleep!

Nothing will go past your conscious mind, ever, as therapy does not tap into your secrets!  You will not divulge any personal information, unless you wish to and neither will you be asked or prompted in any way.

Hypnotherapy does not tamper or manipulate your subconscious mind in any way!

What can be treated with hypnosis?
Please do not consider this list to be exhaustive:

  • Phobias – fear of:
Mice, open spaces, birds, flying, public speaking, confined spaces, and elevators, to name a few.

  • Performance Improvement:
Reading, spelling, charisma, speech, studying, sexual, job interviews, spelling, sports, exams.

  • Habits:
Eating, cleaning, nail biting, shopping, tooth grinding, thumb-sucking, hair pulling, skin picking and smoking

  • “Physical problem”:
Asthma, allergies, pain management, morning sickness, addictions, high blood pressure, stress, insomnia, morning sickness.

Generally speaking hypnosis can be used to treat any problem that is caused by limiting beliefs, habits and learned behaviours. A whole lot of problems are actually caused by “incorrect” teaching and/or learning strategies. It is however important that you always consult your doctor for physical issues before consulting a hypnotist. Using hypnosis for pain management can relieve you from a lot of pain. But remember that pain is a signal from the body that you need to attend to something. It’s not something that should be suppressed or ignored.

Will it work for me?
Every person responds to hypnosis differently according to their willingness to change.

For example, if you do not want to give up addictive shopping, but it is your partner’s wish, it will not work for you.

So don’t rely on claimed success rates! It depends on your motivation and commitment to change. Contrary to common misbelief, you do not have to be weak in mind to have hypnosis. In reality, the wiser and more aware that you are the better you will respond.

How many sessions will I need?
It depends on each condition treated along with the severity of the condition. In a number of cases it can take four to six sessions.  The initial session would involve  assessment and a treatment plan discussion.

Just keep in mind you have not reached this state overnight, you may resolve this issue in allocated sessions. However, it may take longer than the allocated sessions. After all some people have spent many years, if not all of their life, conditioning themselves to behave or say negative things.

Do I need a referral?
You will need a referral from your Healthcare professional for any physical issues or mental disorders. This must be provided prior to sessions being able to commence.

Can I be hypnotised?

Have you ever driven to home or work without any awareness of having done so and found yourself thinking "I don't remember how I got here"". If nothing specific comes to mind about your journey, then you were hypnotised during your journey.

This can happen when watching TV and not being able to recall too much about the particular program that you have been watching for the last 60 minutes.

Although in both examples you were aware of the world around you but your mind was thinking about something else. It was preoccupied with other thoughts.  You were concentrating on something else.

What payment method can I use?

Payment can be made by Cheque, Cash, Credit Card, EFTPOS, Postal Order or Pay Pal
