What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is beyond a doubt one of the most powerful methods of creating change in a person.
Hypnosis is a naturally induced state of relaxed concentration – a state in which we communicate suggestions to our subconscious mind. It can actually make changes at the subconscious level.
There is no magic to achieving success with hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses to, can reach deep relaxation and redirected focus.
Definition of hypnotherapy
Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep. It does involve the induction of a trance-like condition, but when the client is actually in an enhanced state of awareness, concentrating entirely on the hypnotist’s voice.
How does it work?
Hypnosis is thought to work by altering our state of consciousness in such a way that the analytical left-hand side of the brain is turned off, while the non-analytical right-hand side is made more alert. The conscious control of the mind is inhibited, and the subconscious mind awoken. Since the subconscious mind is a deeper-seated, more instinctive force than the conscious mind, this is the part which has to change for the patient’s behaviour and physical state to alter.
For example, a patient who consciously wants to overcome their fear of heights may try everything they consciously can to do it, but will still fail as long as their subconscious mind retains this terror and prevents the client from succeeding. Progress can only be made by reprogramming the subconscious so that deep-seated instincts and beliefs are abolished or altered.
Do I lose my self-control?
Never, this is a common fear and a misbelief. You are in total control of yourself during the entire therapy. People will not do things under hypnosis that they would be unwilling to do otherwise. The person being hypnotised decides how deep they will go in trance and what suggestions they will accept and when to awaken.
Therapy aims at helping you gain better control of yourself! You are always aware of what is happening around you.
You hear the therapist all the time. In fact, there is no point the therapist talking to you if you were asleep!
Nothing will go past your conscious mind ever, as therapy does not tap into your secrets!
You will not divulge any personal information, unless you wish to and you will not be asked to.
Therapy does not tamper or manipulate your subconscious mind in any way!
What can be treated with hypnosis?
Please do not consider this list to be exhaustive:
-
Phobias – fear of:
Mice, open spaces, birds, flying, public speaking, confined spaces, and elevators, to name a few.
-
Performance Improvement:
Reading, spelling, charisma, speech, studying, sexual, job interviews, spelling and sports
-
Habits:
Eating, cleaning, nail biting, shopping, tooth grinding, thumb-sucking, hair pulling, skin picking and smoking
-
“Physical problem”:
Asthma, allergies, pain management, morning sickness, addictions, high blood pressure, stress, insomnia, morning sickness,
Generally speaking hypnosis can be used to treat any problem that is caused by limiting beliefs. A whole lot of problems are actually caused by “incorrect” teaching and/or learning strategies. It is however important that you always consult your doctor for physical issues before consulting a hypnotist. Using hypnosis for pain management can relieve you from a lot of pain, but remember that pain is a signal from the body that you need to attend to something; it’s not something that should be suppressed.
Will it work for me?
Every person responds to hypnosis differently according to their willingness to change.
For example, if you do not want to give up shopping, but it is your partner’s wish, it will not work for you.
So don’t rely on claimed success rates! It depends on your motivation and commitment to change. Contrary to common misbelief, you do not have to be weak in mind to have hypnosis. In reality, wiser you are the better you will respond.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on each condition treated and its severity. In a number of cases it can take three sessions, I would suggest four sessions and the initial session would involve the assessment and treatment plan discussion.
Just keep in mind you have not reached this state overnight, you may resolve this issue in allocated sessions. However, it may take longer than the allocated sessions.
Do I need a referral?
You will need a referral from your Healthcare professional for any physical issues or mental disorders. This must be provided prior to sessions being able to commence.
How much does it cost?
Initial 20 minute consultation is free.
